LAHAINA – The late President John F. Kennedy saw the wisdom of physical fitness programs for the health and integrity of the nation. That focus has been paid forward and is represented in the Presidential Youth Fitness Challenge of today.

With the guidance of physical education teacher Tom Popdan, 87 Sacred Hearts School students achieved recognition for their sterling efforts over the present school year in the PYFC program.

Sixty-seven of them achieved national recognition through a top 50 percent finish in the required pull-ups, sit-ups, endurance run and flexibility measurements.

The remaining 20 student athletes achieved presidential recognition, which represented the impressive accomplishment of being within the top 15 percent of the young athletes tested across the nation.

The students were honored at an awards ceremony on April 26 at Sacred Hearts School.

“This was certainly an outstanding effort by these first- to eighth-graders. They are motivated to get better and practiced diligently at school and at home,” said mentor Popdan.
