LAHAINA – Kid Zone Maui in Emerald Plaza in Lahaina offers tumble, cheer and now rhythmic gymnastics programs for children ages two and older.

The tumble and cheer programs are well established. Recent year-end recitals marked the debut of rhythmic gymnastics in the State of Hawaii and gave the upper level classes from Kid Zone an opportunity to showcase their new tumble skills.

There are 18 girls who have become pioneers in rhythmic gymnastics in Lahaina. Coached by Suzi Bortz and Sue Martin, these girls are leading the way to establish the sport here in the islands.

There are seven girls in the program – nicknamed “Maui’s Magnificent Seven” – who are now part of the United States Gymnastics Association and are qualified to compete.

A silent auction was recently held at Lahaina Cannery Mall. They raised enough money to bring a judge, Arzu Karaali from Seattle, and Washington Level 7 Athlete of the Year Isabella Ivanova to Maui to hold a workshop on Jan. 29-30, then a competition on Jan. 31.

The “Magnificent Seven” learning rhythmic gymnastics are (from left): Grace Devane, Lacie Leon, Noelani Ligienza, Carly Cullingan, Devyn Gruber, Sofia Mallari and Emi Burman.

The rhythmic program is taking new students; interested parents can visit www.kidzonemaui.com.
