King Kamehameha III students learn the gift of giving

By Staff | Dec 24, 2015

Second- and third-graders at King Kamehameha III Elementary School helped needy families this holiday season.

LAHAINA – This is the season when everyone scurries about in the spirit of gift giving. For the last two weeks, I have witnessed great acts of giving on the part of our second and third grade students at King Kamehameha III Elementary School.

Our students became a part of a project we call “The Giving Tree.” The purpose of the project is to bring joy to families experiencing a difficult time this holiday season by collecting money and fulfilling the dreams of children.

The mission of the teachers is for our students to understand that even a small gesture of kindness can make a world of difference in the lives of others.

Each day the students would bring in donations in their hand decorated envelopes. Each student who donated was given a personalized ornament with the statement, “The greatest gift is

giving.”

With smiles on their faces, they proudly hung their ornament on a six-foot noble fir tree in our classroom. It is now loaded with the ornaments – a testament to their generosity.

With $1,500 that was donated, we were able to purchase gifts such as skateboards, boogie boards, baby products, toys and much more.

I would like to thank the Salvation Army for spearheading the Angel Tree Project, which lead to our involvement. I would also like to thank the second and third grade teachers for their participation.

May we all learn from the generous giving of the children. Happy Holidays to all!
