Maui Plein Air Event Committee announces 2016 roster of artists

By Staff | Nov 26, 2015

The annual event allows the public to observe top plein air artists up close as they create their works of art outdoors.

WEST MAUI – In its 11th year, the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational Event Committee is mixing things up a bit – new locations for outside painting events, and nine new top-rung artists to dazzle art enthusiasts and collectors.

This February event allows the public to observe talented plein air artists up close as they create their works of art outdoors. Collectors also get a chance to buy fresh, original paintings to adorn their homes and workplaces.

Every exceptionally talented artist has a unique style and approach to capturing Maui scenes and lifestyles, in addition to a genuine aloha for our island. This synergy will appeal to art enthusiasts, whether they are artists, collectors, art educators or art students.

“I am delighted to see how the event size and quality are growing – it’s a Maui art destination event, bringing back visitors every year,” said Lois Reiswig, co-event sponsor of the painting invitational and president of the Maui Arts League.

Lynn Shue, a co-event sponsor and owner of The Village Galleries, agrees: “The caliber of artists continues to elevate this event. Lahaina is becoming an art Mecca,” she said.

Maui plein air artist Ronaldo Macedo, founder and a co-event sponsor of the invitational, is very proud of how the event has grown in prestige.

Prominent Mainland plein air artists new to the 2016 event include Kenn Backhaus (PA), Rick DeLanty (CA), Andy Evansen (MN), John P. Lasater IV (AR), James McGrew (CA), Jason Sacran (AR), Aaron Schuerr (MT), Mian Situ (CA) and Jim Wodark (CO).

Hawaii artists with acclaimed talent and aloha on this year’s roster are Mark Brown of Oahu, Mike Carroll of Lanai, and Carleton, Michael Clements, Betty Hay Freeland, Ronaldo Macedo and Macario Pascual of Maui.

Event attendees will be happy to see these “collectors’ favorite” artists returning in 2016: Jacobus Baas (CA), Hiu Lai Chong (MD), Debra Huse (CA), Greg LaRock (CA), Jim McVicker (CA), Clark Mitchell (CA), Mary Pettis (MN), Lori Putnam (TN), Dave Santillanes (CO) and Randall Sexton (CA). “Returning artists and nationally acclaimed newcomers will sketch, brush and layer an exciting mix of masterpieces. How they see and interpret our stunning natural environment, cultural icons and cherished historical sites is always educational and fun,” said Event Coordinator Una Somerville.

The public is welcome. The Kick-Off Paint Out event features artists painting outside at Lahaina Harbor and the surrounding area on Saturday, Feb. 13. Watch them again at the Wednesday, Feb. 17, Sunset Paint Out at Montage Kapalua Bay. Don’t miss the challenging two-hour Quick Draw event at Canoe Beach Park and vicinity on Friday, Feb. 19.
