Lahaina to celebrate Jim Luckey’s life

November 19, 2015
Lahaina News

The Luckey Family and Lahaina Restoration Foundation will host a buffet and memorial service for Executive Director Emeritus Jim Luckey in the Old Lahaina Prison yard (187 Prison St.) on Sunday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Luckey passed away on July 12 after a long illness. His family - wife, Annie of Eugene, Oregon; and sons, David and Tad of Lahaina and Thomas of Seattle, Washington - request that any donations made in Jim's memory go to Sacred Heart Medical Center Hospice, 677 E. 12th Ave. #N110, Eugene, Oregon 97401.

His family said the hospice staff helped make Jim's last days the very best possible.

For the Lahaina celebration of life, doors will open at 3 p.m. for guest registration. A buffet featuring a variety of pupus will be available along with refreshments.

There will be displays on Luckey's life and work in Lahaina as well as live music.

If you don't know Jim's background here, it's no exaggeration to say he is among the most important people in Lahaina's rich history.

After a career in the lumber business, he joined Lahaina Restoration Foundation as executive director in 1973. During his 25-year career, he worked to save, and restore, many of Lahaina Town's cultural and historic sites.

Without Jim, Lahaina Restoration Foundation and dedicated volunteers with vision, Hale Pa'i (House of Printing) at Lahainaluna High School, the U.S. Seaman's Hospital, Wo Hing Temple, Hale Aloha and Hale Pa'ahao (Old Lahaina Prison) - the site of his service - might not be around today.

At 4 p.m., a Hawaiian blessing will be given. Lahaina Restoration Foundation board members and long-time supporters will speak, as will Jim's family members.

Parking is available in the county lot at the corner of Prison and Front streets.

For more information, call the Lahaina Restoration Foundation office at 661-3262 or e-mail Executive Director Theo Morrison at theo@LahainaRestoration.org.
