West Maui community loses Harry Robertson

LAHAINA - Harry Leslie Robertson, 73, of Lahaina passed away on Oct. 8, 2015 at Maui Memorial Medical Center peacefully in his sleep after a nine-year fight with Lymphoma. He passed away ten days away from his 74th birthday.

He was born on Oct. 18, 1941 in East London, South Africa. He went to Kingswood boarding school in Grahamstown, South Africa, and then went on to be a scholarship student graduating with a degree in chemical engineering at the University of Cape Town.

While going to university, he had summer employment at Sasol as a process engineer. Also while at university, he was an avid rower. His team won the South African National Championship in 1963.

A Celebration of Life for Harry Leslie Robertson will be held on Nov. 9 at the Robertson’s home in Lahaina.

Upon immigrating to the U.S. in 1968, he received an offer to work for Fluor Corporation and earned his Master in Business Administration Degree from Cal State Long Beach. He retired after 29 years and moved to Lahaina.

Robertson was an active retiree in Lahaina. He worked as a concierge at Napili Surf and a "tennis pro" at The Whaler.

He was a PTA president at Lahainaluna High School, volunteered with the U.S. Census, and also helped provide free tax services for AARP.

He enjoyed playing tennis, sailing, back-packing, camping, and traveling all over the world, visiting six continents and more than 25 countries. He hiked over 300 miles on the John Muir Trail in California.

Harry is survived by his wife of 35 years, Peggy Odell Robertson, as well as their two children: Reed Odell Robertson and Kate Robertson Marks.

Harry was the son of George Leslie Robertson of Bellside, Scotland, and Kathleen Crofton Baldwin of Middlesex, England.

Harry will be remembered as a gentleman and a scholar, as well as a wonderful father, husband and friend to everyone who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Nov. 9 at the Robertson's home; friends and family are welcome.
