Help the tutor project reach West Maui keiki

May 14, 2015
Lahaina News

There are few programs in West Maui as successful and life-changing as the Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project.

Entering its 15th run in the 2015-16 school year, the program matches caring mentors with King Kamehameha III, Princess Nahienaena and Lahaina Intermediate School students who need help.

The results are incredible. Many students who are initially struggling in the classroom catch up, start to enjoy learning and eventually thrive in the classroom with help from their tutors, including teenagers at Lahainaluna High School.

The tutor project was founded by, and has been managed by, veteran educators Pat and Richard Endsley for 14 years.

There is no guaranteed sustaining sponsor for this ongoing volunteer effort. The annual budget is supported through community fundraisers, some county assistance and donations.

Support the tutor project by attending or contributing to the Aina Nalu Wine & Silent Auction Fundraiser on Saturday, May 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Aina Nalu Pavilion in Lahaina Town.

The benefit will feature a silent auction, wine, pupus and entertainment by smooth jazz guitarist Gary Larson.

Contributions toward the success of this event can be made in several ways: financial donations, wine, supplies, merchandise/gift cards or an in-kind gift for the silent auction. Volunteers are also needed for the event.

The goal for the 2015 fundraiser is to surpass 2013's $21,000 donation to the program. Bus transportation for students to and from tutoring sessions, supplies and snacks are just some of the mounting costs each year.

Donations to the fundraiser can be made by contacting Barbara Potts at barb@alohapotts.com. Checks made payable to People for Educational Equality can be mailed to Aloha Realty Group, 180 Dickenson St., Suite 212, Lahaina, HI 96761.

Selling for $60 per person, tickets to the fundraiser can be purchased online at Eventbrite.com or pfee.org, or by contacting Tori LaPolla at tlapolla@ortc.com.

The Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project's

mission is to make a difference in the lives of students and to build Maui's future - one child at a time. Support this amazing program.
