LAS featuring artwork by Hoenig and Wundrum

April 9, 2015
Lahaina News

LAHAINA - Lahaina Arts Society will feature two member artists, Bob Hoenig and Victoria Wundrum, in the Banyan Tree Gallery through May 3.

Hoenig has been working in ceramics on Maui since 1991. His focus is original, functional stoneware pottery with a tropical theme (turtle bowls, sushi plates, platters and tiles).

He also creates one-of-a-kind pieces utilizing the sgrafitto technique (Italian meaning "to etch or scratch"). All sgrafitto pieces (bowls, plates, platters, tiles) are individually hand carved and unique.

Bob Hoenig will demonstrate his sgrafitto technique on two Sundays, April 12 and 19, in the Banyan Tree Gallery in the Old Lahaina Courthouse.

After many years of creating art, Wundrum faced her fear of watercolor and was surprised to find it was the way to best express herself, using the combination of control and freedom that happens when you apply water to paper and allow pigment to move as it will.

She is inspired by the colors found on Maui, and using layer upon layer of sheer watercolor, translates that inspiration to her paintings. She offers her work as originals as well as paper and metal giclees. In addition, she paints wooden boxes.

Using various media, Wundrum repurposes a box found at a garage sale or flea market into something beautiful that is perfect for storing special memories of Maui.

The two artists will cohost a reception at the Banyan Tree Gallery in Lahaina on Friday, April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, phone the gallery at 661-0111.
