The Lahaina Intermediate School Renaissance Program announced the Students and Staff of the Month for September: seventh-grader Estephanie Hernandez, Ui Kuaana (nominated by students), eighth-grader Gracie Marchesi, Cindy Koyama (nominated by colleagues), sixth-graders Kamahie Samudio and Cherry Ramos, eighth-grader Seraya Casco and seventh-grader Malia Kaufanonga.

Harvest Festival set

KAPALUA – Kumulani Chapel will host its annual Harvest Festival for keiki on Thursday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hale Hokulani (the barn) in Kapalua on Office Road across from Sansei.

Keiki through fifth grade are encouraged to dress in friendly costumes and enjoy the fun, including game booths, prizes, candy, hot dogs, popcorn, jumping castles and a few surprises! Admission is free. This year, the chapel encourages families to be a blessing this Thanksgiving by bringing canned or nonperishable food donations for Feed My Sheep. Lahainaluna to host Parent Information Night

Lahaina Cannery Mall will provide a safe, air-conditioned place for families to enjoy Halloween magic, trick-or-treating, face painting, crafts and its famous keiki costume contest this Oct. 31 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Spellbinding family magic from the renowned Kupanaha show performers (pictured) begins at 5 p.m. The keiki costume contest follows at 6 p.m. More than a dozen prizes will be given away in five age groups (0-2, 3-4, 5-8, 9-12, and 16-plus). From 5 to 8:30 p.m., keiki can go trick-or-treating from store to store, enjoy face painting and take photos with Frankenstein by Imaging Plus Hawaii. Come in costume. The event is free for the whole family.

LAHAINA – Cyber-bullying and Achieve 3000 reading programs will be among the topics of discussion during the Parent Information Night at Lahainaluna High School on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the library.

Presentations by students in engineering and architectural programs will be on display, as well as a Hiki No video that aired on the Hawaii Public Broadcasting system. First quarter report cards will be distributed at the end of the event.

Luna Class of 2015 holding Bread Sale

The Morgenstern Trio — from left, Emanuel Wehse (violin/cello), Catherine Klipfel (piano) and Stefan Hempel (violin) — will perform on Friday, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater. The three musicians of the Morgenstern Trio joined forces in 2005 at the Folkwang Academy in Essen. After only two years of intensive collaboration, the trio was awarded several important prizes and now tour with radiant reviews as one of the most exciting new chamber groups from Europe. LAHAINA – All Lahainaluna High School seniors have been issued tickets to sell apple cinnamon and cinnamon bread for $8 each.

Meet LAS artists

LAHAINA – Come “Meet the Artists” at Lahaina Arts Society. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., local artists will be demonstrating in the Banyan Tree Gallery in the Old Lahaina Courthouse.

Darren Lee will perform songs from his popular “Burn’n Love” Elvis concert show at the MEO Senior Fair on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Maui War Memorial Complex. Judy’s Gang, Yaeko Yamamoto (Japanese dancers) and the Lahaina-Honolua Kupuna Serenaders will also perform. The theme of this year’s fair is “Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow.” More than 80 vendors will provide health information; there will also be crafts from MEO senior clubs, local food and refreshments, free health screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar, and free flu shots.

Talk story with jewelry artist Teri Saunders on Oct. 28, oil/mixed-media artist Podge Elvenstar on Oct. 29 and wood/glass artist Jim Smith on Oct 30.

About Boating Safely Course set

KIHEI – The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering an introductory two-day About Boating Safely (ABS) Course on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The classes will be held at the whale sanctuary building at 726 S. Kihei Road.

This introductory course includes general information about choosing and maintaining a boat, operating a boat or PWC safely, navigation rules and aids to navigation, handling boating emergencies, and much more.

Both Saturday and Sunday – covering both the ABS course and the State Law Addendum – are required for Hawaii boat operator licensing.

The cost of the class is $40, payable the first night by cash or check. Books are provided by the state.

Boat insurance may be discounted with completion of this course (check with your carrier). The instructors are all trained by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and volunteer their time to promote safe boating.

This course fulfills the new Hawaii requirements for the licensing of boat operators that take effect Nov. 10, 2014. Upon completion of this course, you will receive a card with a Hawaii Department of Land & Natural Resources endorsement, which is your proof of completion of the boat operator education requirements.

Learn solar energy options

LAHAINA – Na Kupuna O Maui invites the community to attend educational awareness events on solar energy. Rising Sun Solar, Sunrun Solar and Sunpower will participate.

Bring your electric bill to a session, which will be held at Lahaina Civic Center on Oct. 22 or 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 to 5 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m. both days.

Fall Festival of Savings slated

LAHAINA – Lahaina Gateway will have shopping and dining specials on Saturday, Oct. 25, during the “Fall Festival of Savings.”

Supercuts Lahaina Gateway will hold its grand opening celebration. After a Hawaiian blessing at 9 a.m., the store will open at 10 a.m. with $13 haircuts all day, live radio remote, special offers and goodies for kids.
