LAHAINA - Duke's Beach House restaurant became the latest local institution to step up to improve Lahaina Public Library with a generous donation of everything needed to show lively presentations from computer files.

The donation by Duke's, HK West Maui Community Fund and West Maui Preservation Association includes a projector, special public address system, screen and laptop computer.

University of Hawaii at Manoa Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies Professor Ronald Williams Jr. will be the first speaker to use the equipment on Saturday, Sept. 6.

His talk, "Recovering Native Heroes - Lahaina, A Center of Native Patriotism," at 10:45 a.m., will cover the rich and inspiring history of some of Lahaina's nearly forgotten heroes,

Guests are encouraged to arrive at the event early, since a similar presentation on Queen Liliuokalani was made before a packed house.

Library Branch Manager Madeleine Buchanan said the equipment also allows projection of movies from the state library system's extensive collection.

The latest donation adds to the $50,000 the North Beach Association group provided for a security system, plus other funds it donated.

Nearly $300,000 in grants and services provided by 21 vendors and the Maui Friends of the Library were instrumental in a recent project to refurbish the library inside and out.

The next phase in the revitalization of the library, according to Maui Friends of the Library Board Member Sara Foley, involves planting native plants in front of the library, installing a taro patch and creating historical paths.

The latest landscaping work organized by the Maui Friends of the Library is being financed by a grant from Maui County in cooperation with Lahaina Restoration Foundation.
