Water and wastewater treatment classes set

“This course offers people the opportunity to start a new career working with water in Hawaii, or deepen their practical knowledge if they are currently employed by a local company,” said instructor Raymond Sled.

KAHULUI – The University of Hawaii Maui College’s EdVenture has expanded its noncredit training on the fundamentals of water and wastewater to serve participants on Kauai and Maui.

Classes on Kauai will be delivered via Polycom video-conferencing, with additional site visits to local Kauai water and wastewater treatment plants. Both day and evening classes are available on both islands.

The Maui and Kauai training opportunities were developed to meet an emerging need identified by the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) – the impending retirement of water and wastewater treatment plant operators.

Classes are open to anyone interested in gaining knowledge and skills in water and wastewater management, and provide technical instruction combined with field experience.

“This course offers people the opportunity to start a new career working with water in Hawaii, or deepen their practical knowledge if they are currently employed by a local company,” said instructor Raymond Sled, former water maintenance manager for the City of Renton, Washington.

Evening classes begin Sept. 2 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. Day classes begin Sept. 8 and will be offered on Mondays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The water/wastewater program is partially funded by a $287,419 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. Funding does not pay for student costs to participate.

Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities.
