Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project gearing up for another year

August 14, 2014
BY ALOHA REALTY GROUP , Lahaina News

LAHAINA - The Lahaina Complex After School Tutor Project was founded by Richard and Pat Endsley of Lahaina over 13 years ago. It helps students in the four public schools of West Maui to increase literacy and comprehension in various subjects and to build self confidence, selfesteem and leadership qualities. The project is staffed with all volunteer tutors and provides bus service, snacks, annual curriculum, and incentives for students.

The program serves hundreds of students every year on a very limited budget. Typically, the project has about 80 volunteer tutors. However, some of the tutors from last year are not going to be able to help out this year. So, we need a few more tutors - no experience required. Tutoring begins on Sept. 24 and ends on April 1 and takes place at the elementary, intermediate and high schools in Lahaina.

The tutoring experience is rewarding for the tutor and can be life-changing for the student. Barbara Potts has tutored sixth grade math for several years and enjoys the students and the experience.

She also chairs a bi-annual fundraiser for the tutoring project at aina nalu, now planned for May of 2015. The last fundraiser in May 2013 raised $21,000 for the tutor project. It was a beautiful and elegant evening enjoyed by many in the community, including local dignitaries like the mayor, as well as state and county representatives.

The tutor project has no regular source of funding, so this fundraiser is an important aspect of the program's operational budget. We also need help with planning and implementation for the 2015 fundraiser, including financial and silent auction donations.

Consider tutoring, helping with the fundraiser, or donating to this important project that benefits hundreds of public school children and their families in West Maui every year.
