UPCOUNTRY – 9th Life Hawaii holds monthly free/low-cost cat spay/neuter clinics. The next clinic will be held on Saturday, July 26.

The Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Solo Sessions continue at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, in the McCoy Studio Theater with Bill Champlin. A singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Champlin is probably best known the world over for his role as soulful singer/keyboardist with the iconic jazz-pop band Chicago. His featured spots on the hits “Look Away” and “Hard Habit to Break” are among his mainstream highlights. Other well-known songs you might expect to hear live this evening are “I Don’t Wanna Live Without Your Love,” “Here In My Heart,” “You’re Not Alone,” and “In The Heat Of The Night.” Tickets are $30 or $45; call 242-SHOW.

The organization has sterilized more than 6,040 cats for the Maui community. All cats are welcome except pregnant cats. 9th Life Hawaii can sterilize cats as small as two pounds (roughly two months of age). The suggested donation is $35, but the clinics are free if paying is a hardship. 9th Life Hawaii can transport the cats from Lahaina to its fully equipped Upcountry surgery clinic. Cats are returned later the same day to the pickup location.

It’s important to also sterilize male cats to eliminate spraying and fighting. Call 573-3365 and leave your name, address, phone number and e-mail address, so 9th Life Hawaii can send you a surgical consent form to register for upcoming clinics. The spay/neuter slots fill up fast.

Free guitar concerts set

LAHAINA – Guitarists from Hawaii and across the United States will perform two concerts on Maui that are free and open to the public.

The first will take place at Lahaina Jodo Mission at 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina on Wednesday, July 29, at 7 p.m. The second will take place at Keawala’i Congregational Church at 5300 Makena Road in Makena on Thursday, July 30, at 7 p.m.

The programs will include solo and ensemble music from around the world. The concert is an annual event that is part of the week-long guitar masterclass taught by Benjamin Verdery, renowned American guitarist and chair of the Guitar Deparment at the Yale School of Music.

This is the 15th year that Verdery has held a guitar masterclass on Maui. Over that time, more than 125 guitarists have come from across the United States and around the world to Maui to study with Verdery – many of them returning several times.

The class includes the performance of ensemble music, with the 15 to 20 guitarists in the class performing as a guitar orchestra. Each year, the orchestra performs at least one piece of music written by a Hawaiian composer. This year, that piece will be Bailey Matsuda’s “Born and Raised,” in an arrangement by Ian O’Sullivan.
