LAHAINA - Working with 34 donors this year, the Lahainaluna High School Foundation was able to present a total of 52 Lahainaluna High School student scholarships and two teacher awards totaling $166,000.
The scholarship award ceremony was held at the new Lahainaluna cafeteria on May 7, and the two teacher awards were presented at the staff meeting on May 21.
The foundation began its scholarship program with just six $1,000 scholarships in 2001. The program has dramatically grown to this new record amount of $166,000.
With the addition of this year's awards, LHSF has been able to provide more than $775,000 in scholarships.
A first-year scholarship, the $1,000 Ebrahaim Gabbay, M.D., Memorial Scholarship, was given to Kailey Sagar and donated by Suzanne Gabbay in memory of her father. Also noteworthy was the Dr. Brendan Krause Chiropractic Scholarship, which debuted last year as a $500 scholarship but increased this year to three $1,000 scholarships. The recipients were Tyrone Agbayani, Maile Altier and Breea Yamat.
Awarded at the Lahainaluna program on May 7 were second-year scholarships: The Masters at Kaanapali Hillside-Blaze Kalilikane Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 awarded to Corban Kaikkonen, and the Sgt. James S. Kusuda Memorial Scholarship for $1,000 awarded to Zoe Miller.
Now in its third year, The Front Street Scholarship, a renewable scholarship for up to $35,000 a year, was awarded to Lorilei Vistacion and renewed for Chelsey Erickson-Vierra and Jeremy de Gracia. The Front Street Scholarship comes from an anonymous donor.
The scholarships and recipients also included the Boss Frog Dive and Surf Scholarship, $1,000, to Kamaka Barbosa-Pamat; Central Pacific Bank Scholarship, $1,000, to Kelsey Shultz; Fred Izumi Legacy Scholarship, $2,000, to Jessa Emmerich; H&K Takenaga Legacy Scholarship, $1,500, to Stephanie Lawless; Illocandia Filipino Store Scholarship, $500, to Abigail Haduca; and the Kaanapali Land Management Scholarship, $1,000, to Anna Tillman.
TS Restaurants again presented four $1,000 scholarships: the Duke's Restaurant Scholarship to Nainoa Stewart, Kimo's Restaurant Scholarship to Siera Olvera, Leilani's on the Beach Restaurant Scholarship to Kayla Ewing and Hula Grill Restaurant Scholarship to Alicia Huliganga.
The Lahainaluna High School Foundation presented $1,000 scholarships to Lizelle Lazaro, Arinjy Fontanos, Maile Altier, Kirsten Gilchrist, and the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism Scholarship to Taylor Gaarde.
Additional scholarships include The Alfredo Fred Sarian Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Kailey Sagar; Maureen S. Ariyoshi Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Itzi Berry; RVN Restaurant Scholarship of $1,000 to Kawens Murray; Steven Strong, M.D., Memorial Scholarship of $2,500 to Kirsten Gilchrist; Territorial Savings Bank Scholarship of $750 to Jansen Panlasigui-Domingo; Valley Isle Federal Credit Union Scholarship of $1,000 to Dustin Casco-Deleon; West Maui Veterans Club Scholarship of $1,000 to Ho'olai'keao Cabanilla; and Tadashi Sato Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Marison Topinio.
West Maui Federal Credit Union awarded $1,000 scholarships to Maile Amine, Ho'ola']ikeao Cabanilla, Rachelle Fushikoshi, Jesselie Marie Olpindo and Lithe Pokipala-Waiohu.
Bank of Hawaii awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Mary Varquez, the Hyundai Tournament of Champions Scholarship ($1,000) went to Bronson Kaina, and $500 was awarded to Dustin Casco-DeLeon from the Imi Nau'ao Scholarship.
The Roy and Betty Sakamoto Scholarship for $1,500 went to Karen Galuardo and was renewed to Makenna Stockham and Leilani Santos Miranda.
The Makana Aloha Foundation Scholarship for $5,000 was awarded to Juleen Marie Flory and renewed to Haley Robb, Joshua Gaastra and Emna Baccar.
The S&T Ichiki Scholarship for $5,000 was awarded to Candace Hanneman and renewed to Junna Gazman, An Hua and Cheyenne Baltonado.
The teacher honors included the recognition award named "Okage Sama De" (I am what I am because of you), honoring Matsue and the late Hisao Fujii. It was presented to Jon Shigaki.
Additionally, faculty member Ilima Grieg-Hong received the $1,000 Kumagai Teacher Scholarship.
