Help Book Trust Maui County provide books for needy keiki

By Staff | Jun 12, 2014

What was your favorite book as a child? Imagine your world today if you didn’t have the opportunity to own a book.

Sadly, this is reality for many kids right here in Maui County.

This spring, book lovers and literacy advocates have the opportunity to make their dollars go twice as far while supporting book ownership for keiki on Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

Until the end of June, all donations made to Book Trust Maui County will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 by The Makana Aloha Foundation.

“The Makana Aloha Foundation is committed to enhancing the education of students on Maui. Partnering with Book Trust was an obvious choice, and we are excited to support their mission to give students the opportunity to choose and own their own books, increasing their literacy skills and fostering life-long learning,” said foundation President Jami Burks.

“We hope this match will encourage others to join us in supporting the keiki on Maui through this amazing organization.”

Book Trust, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, empowers more than 5,700 children from low-income families in Maui County to choose and own $7 worth of books from Scholastic Book Club flyers each month of the school year.

For only $70 per year, per student, children build a home library of 18-20 books.

In addition, teachers accrue bonus points that allow them to purchase additional classroom books, materials and resources, increasing every dollar invested in Book Trust.

Book Trust serves students in every public elementary school in Maui County. For more information, visit www.booktrust.org.
