LAHAINA - The Lahainaluna High School tradition of excellence continued as the Class of 2014 walked the line at commencement exercises held at Boarders' Field in the heart of the historic campus last Sunday evening.

On a sultry night at the foothills of West Maui, the 235 strong of the 2014 graduating class were honored at the climax of their four years at Lahainaluna and celebrated in their transition from the youth of the community to the cusp of adulthood.

Many will attend colleges here at home or on the Mainland, some will enlist in the military, others will start career training, and a percentage will join the work force immediately; but what they all had in common was the ohana enduring bond of Lahainaluna.

"I feel so lucky to have attended Lahainaluna High School. It's such a unique school - rich in history and tradition - but what really makes it special is the amount of support given by the community. It's a place that will always be kept in my heart, and I'm proud to be one of the many alumni that are always welcomed back home," said Maile Altier, one of the class Valedictorians with Jessa Emmerich, Juleen Marie Flory, Kirsten Gilchrist, Kailey Sager and Lorilei Visitacion.

"As a student at Lahainaluna, I am honored to hold the title of a Luna. This is a title that I will hold with me everywhere I go throughout my life. It is a title of worth to me, my school, my community and my entire state. I'm always pleased to see the enthusiasm expressed by the people I meet when I proudly inform them that I am a Luna," said Sager.

Physical Education teacher, Lady Luna golf coach and mother of two young daughters, Class of 2014 Advisor Laura Jones expressed her impression of the graduates in saying, "I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing and teaching the Class of 2014 for the past four years.

"I remember when they came in as freshmen and at orientation discussing with them how to succeed in high school. Well, the discussions worked, because we have 235 graduates representing the Class of 2014. Congratulations to all of you, and I know you will become successful with your future endeavors. You are leaving here as young mature adults, and I only wish you the best of luck. Congratulations Class of 2014. I am so proud of you."
