Sievanen to share results of reef survey

LAHAINA - Declining fish abundance and coral reefs - that's what more than half of West Side respondents said that they are concerned about in a recent survey that measured perceptions of coastal resource users in West Maui.

Do these perceptions match your own? Do they match what scientists know? What is being done to address these concerns?

Join Dr. Leila Sievanen, an anthropologist based at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center in Honolulu, on May 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Kaunoa Senior Center in Lahaina. She will present responses from surveys administered to 200 people focused on coral reef conditions, threats to the reef and what should be done to address these issues.

Other findings include perceived declines across all resources (fish abundance, coral reef conditions, fish diversity, water quality, monk seal resting, sea turtle nesting, watershed conditions and public facilities).

When asked about threats to coral reefs, the majority of respondents were concerned about invasive species and shoreline development. Learn more at this event, which is free and open to the public.

Tom Rosenquist Legacy Golf Tournament set

KAPALUA - Maui Preparatory Academy announced that the fifth annual Tom Rosenquist Legacy Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 3, at the Bay Golf Course at Kapalua.

Rosenquist, a founder and passionate supporter of Maui Prep and an avid golfer, passed away in September 2009. "The TOM" tournament is one way that the school has chosen to honor his memory and legacy every year.

Although registration is closed for teams, hole sponsorships ($350) and reception tickets ($50) are still available. All proceeds benefit the students of Maui Prep. Last year's event raised over $48,000.

For more information, or to register, contact Cathi Minami at 665-9966 or cminami@mauiprep.org.
