April 17, 2014
Lahaina News

LAHAINA - LahainaTown Action Committee will host the 141st Birthday Celebration of the Banyan Tree on Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20.

Arguably the most famous landmark in Lahaina, the Banyan Tree was planted in 1873 by Sheriff William Owen Smith to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first Missionaries.

LahainaTown Action Committee invites all to come out and celebrate the 141st birthday of the Banyan Tree with birthday cake, live music, a silent auction, crafts and magic. Admission is free.

Brought from India, Lahaina’s landmark Banyan Tree was eight feet high when it was planted. It now has a dozen main trunks and spreads over two-thirds-of-an-acre.

Both days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Maui artists will sell their own artwork, woodcarvings, pottery, glasswork and jewelry.

The lineup for Saturday includes a silent auction from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; interactive magic throughout the park with Magician Brenton Keith from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a performance on stage from 1 to 2 p.m.; free Banyan Tree Birthday Cake at 2 p.m.; and live music from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with Kapule & Friends, Na Kapuna Ohana Serenaders, Na Kamali'i Nani O Lahaina, Upcountry Celtic, Kalama Kids, and Kulewa.

Music on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. will feature George Kahumoku Jr., Haiku Hillbillys, Kapule & Friends, and Uncle Lui Williams.
