Lahaina Restoration Foundation offers $35,000 in scholarships
LAHAINA - Within the context of its mission, Lahaina Restoration Foundation has proudly awarded numerous scholarships to Lahainaluna High School seniors and alumni for over ten years.
This year, through the generous contribution of an anonymous donor, the foundation will award a total of $35,000 in increments of $2,000 to $2,500 to 11 graduating seniors and six alumni.
Officers will be at Mala Wharf on March 8-9 from 8 a.m. to noon to help educate ocean users about humpback whales, monk seals (above), sea turtles and other protected marine species. PHOTO BY CHRIS TURNER/RIMFIRE PHOTOGRAPHY.
Interested seniors and alumni of Lahainaluna must write an essay on topics relating to the importance and challenges of preservation of West Maui's culture and history, and meet all requirements in order to qualify.
Students may obtain applications from Lahainaluna Financial Aid Counselor Kristi Arakawa or download them from www.lahainarestoration.org.
Applications must be returned no later than 11 a.m. on March 14 to the Lahaina Restoration Foundation office located at 120 Dickenson St., Suite A, Lahaina, HI 96761.

Officers to be honored with Kahuola Awards
WAIKAPU - Maui County Fire Department's Kahuola Award Ceremony will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at the Kahili Golf Course Restaurant meeting room.
The ceremony will honor Maui Police Officers Joshua Kalb and Erik Losvar for their heroic actions during a structure fire on June 12, 2013.
The two officers entered a burning unit at the Kaanapali Royale and pulled out the lone male occupant from within.
The Kahuola Award is presented by the Fire & Public Safety Commission and the chief of the Maui Fire Department to recognize the nominee(s) for performing a selfless act, likely resulting in the saving of a human life.
"It is important to recognize the people that go above and beyond community service," said Fire Chief Jeffrey Murray.
Maria Lanakila Church announces Lenten Devotions
LAHAINA - Maria Lanakila Church in Lahaina will hold an additional mass at noon Monday through Friday during Lent.
On Fridays from March 14 through April 11, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Stations of the Cross will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by personal confession with the priest.
At Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua, Stations of the Cross will be held on Fridays at noon, followed by personal confession with the priest.
An Adult Bible Study, "Walking Toward Eternity," begins March 12 on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Learn to walk in love, forgiveness, humility, prayerfulness, faithfulness, sacrifice and thankfulness. Classes will held in St. Marianne Hall.
Parish Mission will be held on March 31 through April 2 at Maria Lanakila Church from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Father Lane Akiona, pastor at St. Augustine by the Sea, Waikiki.
The church will conclude its mission with a Penance Service on April 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Lahaina student makes ASU Dean's List
LAHAINA - Vijay Maulit of Lahaina was named to the Dean's List at Arizona State University.
Undergraduate students who earn 12 or more graded semester hours during a semester in residence at ASU with a grade point average of 3.50 or higher are eligible for the Dean's List.
Japanese Cultural Society to award scholarship
WAILUKU - The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui (JCSM) will be accepting applications for its annual scholarship to be awarded to a graduating high school senior who promotes and perpetuates the Japanese culture through education and/or the arts.

AARP provides free tax assistance and preparation
LAHAINA - AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides free tax assistance and preparation for Maui County taxpayers with low to moderate incomes at four convenient locations on Maui.
Sessions are slated at the West Maui Senior Center at 788 Pauoa St. along Lahainaluna Road from 9 a.m. to noon on March 18 and April 8. To make an appointment, call 661-9432. Assistance will also be offered in Kahului, Kihei and Paia.
Now in its 45th year, AARP Tax-Aide is the nation's largest free tax assistance and preparation service, with special attention to people 60 and older. You do not have to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use this free service.
Last year in Hawaii, AARP Foundation Tax Aide volunteers helped more than 16,000 residents file their federal and state returns, generating more than $5.8 million in total refunds and more than $1.1 million Earned Income Tax Credits.

Ocean User Education Days slated at Mala
LAHAINA - Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) officers will be at Kihei Boat Ramp and Mala Ramp this weekend, March 8-9, from 8 a.m. to noon to help educate ocean users about humpback whales, monk seals, sea turtles and other protected marine species.
DOCARE officers will be joined by staff from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Coast Guard. They will also provide information on the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and bottom fishing rules.
DOCARE and NOAA have a Joint Enforcement Agreement (JEA) that authorizes state enforcement officers to enforce federal fisheries and protected species laws. This partnership provides federal funding to DOCARE to help increase public awareness and enforcement efforts in areas of mutual responsibility.

County to offer health workshop in Lahaina
WAILUKU - The County of Maui will sponsor a "Better Choices, Better Health" workshop series on six Thursdays in Lahaina at Kaiser Permanente.
Classes will be held from March 27 through May 1 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
"Better Choices, Better Health" is an evidence-based educational Health Aging Program designed to help people manage their chronic conditions and overall health through achievable action plans for improving nutrition, exercise, relaxation, communication skills, medication management and more.
Participants receive a book, "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions," and a relaxation CD called "Time for Healing."
Cost is $10 for individuals age 60 and over and for caregivers of any age. Cost is $35 for participants under 60; scholarships are available.
