KAANAPALI - The public is invited to a free Grown on Maui Farmers' Market at Whalers Village Fine Shops & Restaurants in Kaanapali Resort on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Presented by Kaanapali Beach Resort Association (KBRA) in cooperation with the Maui County Farm Bureau and Whalers Village, the community has the opportunity to meet farmers, food producers and chefs.
"It's important to present this market," said Shelley Kekuna, KBRA executive director. "As the local food movement grows nationwide, our farmers' market grows, too."
The market features West Maui farms, including Ho‘opono Farm, SimpliFresh, NapiliFlo, The Neighborhood Farm and MauiGrown Coffee, as well as farms from Hana, Kula, Haiku and Waikapu. PHOTO BY JESSICA PEARL PHOTOGRAPHY.
While the market is quarterly, residents and visitors have an opportunity to learn about buying local every day with produce box delivery services offered by participating vendors such as Kula Fields.
"At Kula Fields Farmshop, we connect island residents and visitors with local farms and food artisans," said owner Roxanne Tiffin. "Kula Fields delivers produce boxes on Maui, Oahu and Lanai. We would love to work with vacation ownership and condo owners, human resources departments and its employees as well as local residents to bring local, fresh and, when available, organic fruits, vegetables and products to island homes."
All products offered for sale at the market are "Grown on Maui." Local farmers, food producers and chefs will demonstrate uses for their wares and answer questions. The market brings together the resort and agricultural communities and highlights the important role both play in Maui's economy,
"Home to over 800 farms, Maui grows a stunning variety of nutritious, flavorful foods, plants and flowers," said Warren K. Watanabe, executive director of the Maui County Farm Bureau.
"With its multiple climates, Maui can grow foods year-round and just about any crop. We encourage the community to come to the market to meet the farmers who grow the food for Maui's restaurants and grocery stores."
Whalers Village will extend free parking from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. with validation obtained at the market.
