Toys for Tots parade set

WEST MAUI - The public is advised of traffic delays due to the 12th annual Street Bikers United Toys for Tots toy collection drive and parade scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14.

The parade of bikers will depart Maalaea Harbor at 11 a.m. for Lahaina and return to Kihei at 1 p.m.

Dusty Payne of Lahaina on Sunday advanced into Round 3 of the Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons at Backdoor on Oahu’s North Shore. Thriving in the hollow waves, Payne defeated Reef McIntosh of Hawaii, then Californian Brett Simpson in Round 2. At press time Monday morning, Payne needed to advance through two more rounds of the Billabong Pipe Masters to requalify for the 2014 ASP World Tour. Preschool to hold silent auction

LAHAINA - Children of the Rainbow Nursery and Preschool will hold its 12th annual silent auction on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lahaina Cannery Mall.

Bid on restaurant meals, activities, gift baskets and merchandise. Everything starts at half the retail price.


Gingerbread Family Festival coming to Maui

KAHULUI - Easter Seals Hawaii will hold its first-ever Gingerbread Family Festival on Maui at its Na Hulu campus in Kahului on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Easter Seals Hawaii is selling kits with everything to build and decorate two gingerbread houses, including gingerbread donated by Safeway, an array of assorted candies donated by CVS/Longs Drugs, gingerbread men donated by Hawaii Life and icing in three colors (red, white and green).

Kits cost $29 and can be assembled onsite at the event or picked up to go.

People can buy kits online at or by phone, 24 hours a day, by calling (888) 295-2626. Participants can sign up for one of two sessions to decorate gingerbread houses: either 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The public is invited to stop by at the Easter Seals Hawaii Maui Campus at 155 S. Wakea Avenue anytime during the event to enjoy the festivities.


Rotarians selling Christmas trees

LAHAINA - Christmas trees are now on sale in the parking lot at Lahaina Cannery Mall, with proceeds benefiting community projects coordinated by the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise.

Trees are on sale weekends from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m.

The inventory includes large and small noble fir trees and wreaths. Everything is kept in a refrigerated container to maintain freshness.

Free delivery is available to any location in West Maui.

The community may also purchase a Christmas tree to be donated to a family in need. The Rotary Club will provide a tree stand, lights, decorations and delivery for every donated tree.

Maui Memorial holding art contest

WAILUKU - Maui Memorial Medical Center is again sponsoring an art contest for young Maui artists in grades K-12.

The theme for this year's contest is "Share the Aloha."

Subject matter may include landscapes, seascapes, animals, people and any other positive ideas that the artist envisions.

Twenty pieces will be chosen, with ten each coming from the groups of grades K-5 and 6-12.

Sacred Hearts School to host Breakfast with Santa

LAHAINA - Breakfast with Santa will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Sacred Hearts School cafeteria.

Each child will get a chance to tell Santa his or her Christmas hopes and dreams, then take home a free photo taken with Mr. Claus himself.

Breakfast includes eggs, sausages, pancakes, rice, fresh fruit salad, juice and coffee.

LAHAINA - Lahainaluna High School is currently looking for coaches in boys golf and track and field for the upcoming season.

Foundation to offer $4 million in scholarships

HONOLULU - Hawaii Community Foundation (HCF) will begin accepting online scholarship applications from Hawaii students seeking financial assistance to fund their higher education.

With more than 180 scholarship opportunities and $4 million in scholarships available, HCF is the third largest private scholarship provider in the state.

HCF has provided scholarships to students to achieve higher education for over 30 years, with individuals receiving an average scholarship reward of $2,200 in 2013. Students can apply at

LAHAINA - Join Lahaina Gateway as the center hosts a fundraiser for the Lahainaluna High School Concert Band and Concert Choir on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., as the students perform beautiful Christmas music.

There will be monetary donations for raffle tickets. Prizes include merchant products, gift cards, books, holiday food and more. All proceeds will benefit the band and choir. Seating is limited; bring chairs if you wish. Bring an unwrapped toy to donate to local charities to enter the door prize contest. Columnist schedules holiday book signings

WEST MAUI - "Voices of Maui" columnist Norm Bezane will hold book signings at the Maui Friends of the Library used bookstores on Friday, Dec. 13, at The Wharf Cinema Center in Lahaina from 4 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center.

"Voices of Maui: Natives and Newcomers," his original book, as well as "Maui for Millions: Tales of Remarkable People" and his latest book, "Voices of Aloha," will be available for signature. All of the books feature profiles of Hawaiians and their culture, entrepreneurs, entertainers, colorful characters and movers and shakers.

The newest book is a special Kaanapali Beach Hotel edition, with one-third of the profiles about people associated with "the Most Hawaiian Hotel."

"The two smaller books retail for $10, making them ideal for gift giving," Bezane said. Each signed book will include a one-of-a-kind personalized Christmas greeting.


Soroptimists seek donations for comfort bags

LAHAINA - Soroptimist International of West Maui seeks donations for comfort bags.

The bags will be distributed to needy West Maui residents. Items sought include shampoo, conditioner, combs, brushes, body soap, razors, shaving cream, tissues, wet wipes and feminine hygiene products.
