LAHAINA – The uphill climb continues for the Lahainaluna High School girls volleyball team led by second-year head coach Lei Nakamura.

According to Coach Lei, who doubles as the Lady Lunas’ softball coach in the spring, her charges continue to battle despite looking up at the rest of the Maui Interscholastic League for the last two seasons.

“We’re very young and inexperienced, but the seniors are giving us everything they’ve got and doing what they can to try and turn things around,” said Nakamura from the sidelines of the Jimmie H. Greig gymnasium on campus.

“The younger girls and the JV team have also shown us great attitude and don’t get down on themselves. They’re all a great bunch of girls.”

The senior leadership core is made up of team captains Kawena Murray, Kaliko Pasco-Dusenberry, Lithe Pokipala-Waiohu and Kimberly Yap. They are all returnees from last year’s squad.

The remainder of the Lady Luna roster is made up of juniors Faavae Galoia, Lina Maria Dagupion, Angel May Quaresma, Patricia Nebrida, Mharicar Tan and Betty Tupou-Koloi and sophomores August Guest and Janie Hoopai.

Coach Lei is assisted by Lissa Kan-Hai, Trixy Nuesca and Joe Keanini. The team manager is Justin Quitoriano.

The MIL season began back in August and runs through Oct. 10, followed by the post-season tournament that will be held at Lahainaluna the week of Oct. 14-19.

The Lady Luna junior varsity team roster includes sophomores Lea Marie Mina, Haylee Patch, Jacina Stone, Caylyn Villatora and Christian Mae Yagyagan, and freshmen Sheila Aina-Manrique and Analiza Pauline Galuardo.

Kan Hai, Nuesca and Keanini coach the JV team along with their duties with the varsity girls.
