Registration extended for drama program

LAHAINA - Theatre Theatre Maui and Lahaina Intermediate School have extended the date for LIS students to sign up for the drama class portion of the Lahaina Complex After-School Tutoring Project.

Starting this week, Kristi Scott and Heidi Turner will teach a free after school drama class for Lahaina Intermediate School students in the school cafeteria.

Classes will be held on Mondays from 2:10 to 3:45 p.m. after school on Sept. 23 and 30; Oct. 14, 21 and 28; Nov. 4 and 18; Dec. 2 and 9; Jan. 13 and 27; Feb. 3, 10 and 24; and March 3 and 10.

The classes culminate with a live performance of an original short play based upon our rich local culture and Hawaiiana.

Registration is open to LIS students in grades 6-8. Students may pick up a registration form in the school office or by contacting Angie Thompson at TTM at 661-1168, (808) 214-7443 or ttmwestmaui@aol.com. Sign up by Sept. 23; registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Learn about the Affordable Care Act

KIHEI - Organizing for Action (OFA) will offer information about the Affordable Care Act on Monday, Sept. 16, in front of Safeway Supermarket in Kihei from 2 to 6 p.m.

Open enrollment for ACA begins on Oct. 1. Health insurance is available to everyone under this new federal program, with selection of health coverage left to the individual. Call 875-1810.

Healthy living workshop to focus on chronic pain, conditions

WAILUKU - The Maui County Office on Aging will sponsor a six-week "Better Choices, Better Health" workshop series. The session begins Wednesday, Oct. 2, with classes set for 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Kaiser Maui Lani Clinic at 55 Maui Lani Parkway.

The course is designed to help people living with chronic conditions better self-manage their symptoms and overall health. It will run on six Wednesdays, including Oct. 2, 9, 23 and 30, and Nov. 6 and 13 (no class Oct. 16).

The cost of the workshop is $10 for those 60 and older, and $30 for those under 60. The course fee includes the textbook "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions" and a relaxation CD. Scholarships are available.

Rotarians plan golf scramble at Kaanapali Kai course

KAANAPALI - The Rotary Club of Lahaina will hold a giant golf scramble fundraiser at the Kaanapali Kai Golf Course on Oct. 26 to raise funds for Maui youth and to push forward the fight to end polio.

The tournament will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Four-member teams will vie for prizes awarded for closest to the pin, low gross (men and women), low net (men and women) and overall top team.

The club is seeking tournament sponsors, hole sponsors for $150 each, and players who will pay $100 each. The golf fee includes a party and prize presentation at Paradise Grill after the tournament.

Proceeds will be used to provide scholarships to Maui County high school students and to fund Rotary International's decades-long campaign to eradicate polio from the planet.

Activities sought for LHS boarding students

LAHAINA - The Lahainaluna High School Boarding Department is looking for afternoon activities for boarding students not participating in sports.

The programs would need to be one hour long, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., on Monday through Thursday and involve 30-40 students.

Luna softball team holding fundraiser

LAHAINA - Lady Luna Softball is holding a chow fun sale on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The donation is $7 per quart. Pickup will be held at Lahaina Hongwanji Mission.
