Athletic physicals slated at Maui Preparatory Academy
NAPILI - Dr. David and Kari Adams will be administering athletic physicals for all high school athletes at Maui Preparatory Academy on Saturday, Aug. 17.
Appointments are open to all high school students on the island and will take place from 8 to 11:50 a.m. Physicals should take approximately 15-20 minutes.
Private Shane Ledbetter graduated from U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego, California, on May 31. The son of Budd and Lola Ledbetter of Lahaina graduated from Lahainaluna High School in the Class of 2012.

Maui Go Red for Women 5K Walk set in Kaanapali
KAANAPALI - The 2013 Maui Go Red for Women 5K Walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 8 a.m. at Whalers Village in Kaanapali.
This event helps to save lives by raising funds for education and community programming on the number one cause of death for women: heart disease. All proceeds will be donated to the local Maui Go Red for Women movement.
Register at mauigoredforwomen.org or mauimarathonhawaii.com. Registration is $20 until Sept. 19, then goes up to $25. All participants receive a free T-shirt.
The walk is sponsored by the Maui Marathon and Leoda's Kitchen & Pie Shop.
Services slated for Edna Pualani Farden Bekeart
LAHAINA - Edna Pualani Farden Bekeart passed away on Monday, June 17, 2013 at the age of 95 in Kaneohe. She was the last surviving sibling of the distinguished Farden family of Lahaina.
While attending the University of Hawaii, she met, then married, Californian Robert Edward Bekeart.
After W.W.II, Edna dedicated her life to education, teaching at the Royal, Kamehameha and Holy Nativity Schools.
Edna was a member of the Honolulu Chapter of Hale o Na Ali'i, The Daughters of Hawai'i, The Prince Kuhio Hawaiian Civic Club, Maunalua Civic Club and Delta Kappa Gamma.
At Holy Nativity School and the Department of Education, she created the Hawaiian Culture Education programs. She is also credited with establishing the May Day and Pa'ina events at Holy Nativity.
She taught ukulele and hula to scores of summer coeds at the University of Hawaii.
Edna was an accomplished Hawaiian music composer and a 2008 recipient of the Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award. She will be remembered for songs such as "Maunalua Bay," "Christmas Love," "Ginger Memories" and the 1960s children's hit "Sassy Little Mynah Bird," which she co-composed with sister Irmgard Aluli.
She was inducted into the National Organization of PEN Women for her musical compositions.
Edna is survived by children Bastel Francois Bekeart (wife Gloria Evans), Dana Bekeart (wife Dorothy Roberts), Marquita Denison (husband William) and four grandchildren.
Memorial church services will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at 4 p.m. at Holy Innocents Church in Lahaina.
Marine Life Identification class slated at UHMC
KAHULUI - Donna Brown will teach a Marine Life Identification class at the University of Hawaii Maui College. The course starts Aug. 30 and runs every Friday morning from 9 to 11:45 a.m. until mid-December.
Students will learn about fish, corals and other invertebrates, and go on field trips snorkeling and to the Maui Ocean Center to practice identifying live creatures. This is a great class for naturalists, volunteers or anyone interested in learning. To register, go to maui.hawaii.edu/.
