MAKAWAO - On Saturday, Aug. 10, at 7:30 p.m. at Seabury Hall, A'ali'ikuhunoa Creative Arts Center and Ebb & Flow Arts (E&FA) will present a free concert, "Chamber Music from San Francisco."

Leading musicians from the San Francisco Symphony - Sarn Oliver and Mariko Smiley, violin; David Kim, viola; and Sebastien Gingras, cello - will perform string quartets from the 20th and 21st centuries.

All are welcome. There will be a 6:30 p.m. pre-concert discussion.

"We are excited to bring this captivating group to Maui, thanks to a second year of support from Makana Aloha Foundation," said Robert Pollock, executive director of E&FA.

"The program contains 20th century 'classics' by Stravinsky and Shostakovich; a work by E&FA's honorary president, Dr. George Walker, the first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize in Music; and world premieres by a member of the group, Sarn Oliver, composer and violinist."

The program will include Stravinsky's groundbreaking "Three Pieces" for string quartet written in 1914, and Shostakovich's "String Quartet #8" created in 1960. He dedicated the work "In Remembrance of the Victims of Fascism and War."

Oliver will offer two premieres of his music: "Transparency and Transcendence" and "Undertow" (for electric string quartet).

The audience will also experience an energetic performance of the second movement of Walker's "String Quartet #1" (1946). His best-known piece, sometimes called "Lyric" for strings, is a stirring and beautiful work.

The long-awaited A'ali'ikuhunoa Creative Arts Center on the campus of Seabury Hall at 480 Olinda Road in Makawao opened in September 2012. It is an elegant and innovative venue for concerts.

This event is part of E&FA's annual, multi-day, multisite, international North South East West Festival 2013.
