Lanakila Club to be renovated

July 18, 2013
Lahaina News

KAHULUI - This year, the Lanakila Club Inc., a private nonprofit organization, has been selected as the beneficiary of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Friends Project and Award.

The project, coordinated by the Rotary Club of Kahului with the participation of members of several other Rotary Clubs on Maui, involves conducting a community service project in collaboration with the selected nonprofit organization and grant of $10,000 to further the nonprofit's mission.

On July 27, the Rotary Club of Kahului and friends and members of the Lanakila Club will participate in a "Market Makeover" at Central Maui Lanakila Clubhouse, a program servicing adults living with mental illness.

The work will involve the construction and installation of shelves, clearing the display area, assembling display shelves for the market and preparing the area for painting.

This makeover will transform a section of the Lanakila Clubhouse by creating a "market" that will outlet aquaponically grown produce, market handmade goods created by the members, face-lift its cafe and create training and employment services and opportunities for the clubhouse members.

Presentation of the grant award from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation will take place at Maui Tropical Plantation during a special luncheon on Monday, July 29.

This award is a collaborative community service activity that involves at least 25 adult Rotarians, 100 community service hours, support of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the Lanakila Club, and friends to service Maui's poor and needy.
