LAHAINA – The Lahainaluna High School track and field team finished in the bottom half of the final Maui Interscholastic League standings for 2013 in both the girls and boys divisions, but several sterling individual efforts brightened the overall picture for coach Dan Skousen.

“We had some amazing individual results, and with the surprising performance of our junior varsity team, the future looks very bright for us,” said Coach Dan, a health teacher at LHS now into his second year of coaching at Lahainaluna after five campaigns at Hana High.

With 11 student athletes competing in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships this week in Honolulu, Lahainaluna will indeed be well-represented in the elite competition.

Junior long distance runner Corban Kaikonnen leads the way for the Lunas, as he qualified for the state meet in the 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter events. He will be joined by senior Mason Sherwood in the high jump, sophomore Emerson Liburd in the 110- and 300- meter hurdles, and senior Michael Naganuma in the discus.

The Lady Luna contingent is headed up by junior hurdler Breea Yamat, who will compete in the 100- and 300-meter events and the 4×400 relay along with sophomores Shaina Saribay Talana and Kahakumele Hamakua, and junior Kailey Sager, who will also compete in the 800.

Junior Kelsey Shultz qualified in the long jump to complete the Lahainaluna roster for the state meet.

Rounding out the roster for the 2013 season were seniors Leanne Alibin, Brenner Duarozan and Yna Villamar; juniors Kaimana Ancog, Dylan Bartalome, Jessa Emmerich, Kirsten Gilchrist, Dillon Magalianes, Shawn Takahashi and Brandon Tejero; sophomores Nicholas Agdeppa, Shawncey Arcangel Sumibay, Angel Cuaresma, Angelica Cuaresma, Patricia Nebrida, Jacob Ramirez and Miyana Wagner; and freshmen Anis Bel, Mikela Cabagua, Bridgette Cuaresma, Sharmaine Gutierrez, Mike Nguyen and Dean Omura.

The Luna coaching staff was headed up by Skousen, along with Ray Yamat, Josh Marek and Randy Casco.

“I’d like to thank the coaching staff and Athletic Director Scott Soldwisch for their assistance throughout the season, and to all of the parents – especially Liz Sager, Laurie Shultz and Carol Liburd – thank you very much as well. We received over $2,000 in community donations in three fundraisers that we held, and this helped tremendously in taking the team to states.

“Overall, I think we had a great season, and with the JV team doing so well, we’re looking forward to a great future. Thank you to everyone,” concluded Coach Dan.
