Lahainaluna to host Athletic Banquet & Awards Presentation

LAHAINA - The Lahainaluna High School Athletic Department will hold the annual LHS Athletic Banquet & Awards Presentation on Thursday, May 16, at 5:30 p.m.

The banquet will be held in Lahainaluna's Hale Pa'ina cafeteria.

This event will recognize and award the outstanding student athletes of each sport for the 2012-13 school year.

The highlight of the evening will be honoring the male and female athletes selected for the "Distinguished Senior Athlete," "Scholar Athlete of the Year" and "Outstanding Athlete of the Year" awards.

A buffet dinner prepared by Ray Camacho and the food service staff will precede the awards ceremony. The cost of the dinner is $10; tickets can be purchased in cash only at the LHS main office.

Seabury Hall to host Craft Fair

MAKAWAO - Seabury Hall will celebrate its 40th annual Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.

The fair has been raising money for financial aid since 1973, giving hundreds of students the opportunity to pursue their dreams and hope for a brighter future.

The Craft Fair features more than 100 of Hawaii's best artists and crafters; entertainment all day long with bands like Nuff Sedd, Dr. Nat & Rio Ritmo, Country Herb, Fred's Garage and Deep Cover on the main stage, and Sabrina Barron, Loni Starr and Joel Katz on the reflecting pond stage; and the event's famous Restaurant Row.

The event will be held on the Seabury Hall campus at 480 Olinda Road in Makawao. Admission is $5 for adults; children 12 and under are free. Free parking is available, as well as premium parking for $10. Visit or call 572-7235.


Haleakala National Park improving parking lots

HALEAKALA - Haleakala National Park was scheduled to begin making improvements to all parking lots in the Summit District this week.

Work includes concrete repairs, regrading, accessibility/ADA improvements and asphalt resurfacing. The scheduled completion time is early September 2013.

The work areas include the Summit Observatory parking lot, Hosmer Grove campground lot and all visitor center and scenic overlook parking lots along the park road. Visit for updates.


Scholarships for Adult Day Health available

KAHULUI - Hale Makua Health Services announced that thanks to a $25,000 grant from The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the organization will now accept applications for financial assistance that provides full and half scholarships to its Adult Day Health program located in Kahului.

Adult day healthcare is intended for individuals who need assistance with activities of daily living, have a safe and secure place to return to at night, and have a physician's prescription for services. The program provides coordinated care by an interdisciplinary team that includes a social worker, nurse, dietitian, and if needed, a physical therapist.

Maui Ocean Center to lead beach cleanup

SOUTH MAUI - Maui Ocean Center will coordinate a beach cleanup on Saturday, May 11, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The group will meet at the Kealia Boardwalk and clean up Sugar Beach and the surrounding areas.

Community Work Day Program will provide gloves, trash bags, grabbers and vests. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat; shoes are optional. The cleanup is open to everyone.


Celebrate May Day at The Wharf

LAHAINA - The Wharf Cinema Center invites the public to come and celebrate May Day on Wednesday, May 1, from noon to 2 p.m.

Enjoy the sweet tropical sounds of Ron Hetteen & Kulewa, learn the history and art of lei-making, watch demonstrations and make your own free lei, and watch Polynesian carvers at work.

Celebrate Free Comic Book Day

LAHAINA - Lahaina, Kihei and Makawao Public Library will offer readers free comic books on Saturday, May 4, in celebration of the 12th anniversary of Free Comic Book Day.

Library patrons showing their valid Hawaii State Public Library System card will receive a free comic book while supplies last.

Lahaina Public Library at 11 a.m. will host "Meet Homestuck Webcomic Costumed Characters."

"Homestuck" is an interactive webcomic created by artist Andrew Hussie. It is the fourth comic series to be published on the website MS Paint Adventures.

At Kihei Public Library from noon to 4 p.m., meet Kihei comic book artist James Silvani.

He is known for his drawings and artwork in Disney's "Darkwing Duck," "The Muppets," "Ducktales," Dreamworks' "How to Train Your Dragon" and other works.

Both programs are suitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
