Wacky ‘ohana back for local comedy ‘Fresher Ahi’

April 11, 2013
Lahaina News

WAILUKU - Last year, theatre audiences were introduced to Andrew, Anden, Tutu and the whole wacky Ahi 'ohana in the hilarious original comedy "Lesser Ahi."

Beginning April 12, "Fresher Ahi" continues the family's funny, endearing and unforgettable antics in part two of the Ahi trilogy at MAPA's Steppingstone Playhouse.

Maui playwrights/actors Derek Nakagawa and Francis Tau'a will reprise their multiple roles (male and female) from "Lesser Ahi," as well as create a host of new characters. And this time, they're joined by the fabulous, funny Kathy Collins.

When audiences last left Ahi brothers Andrew and Anden, they had finally reconciled after years of not speaking to each other - as only close family members can. The story picks up two years later, as the Ahi 'ohana gathers to celebrate a dual baby luau for the brothers' one-year-old children. You can bet that anytime the extended family gets together, sparks are going to fly!

MAPA Executive & Artistic Director and Fresher Ahi Director David Johnston explained the show's broad appeal: "This is one of those stories that everyone can relate to. We see so much of ourselves in these characters, and they remind us of the importance of family, with all its ups and downs."

"Fresher Ahi" runs April 12-28 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. at Steppingstone Playhouse in Queen Ka'ahumanu Center.

Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and $12 for students (18 and under). Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.mauiacademy.org, calling 244-8760 or by visiting the Customer Service Kiosk at the center.
