Ring in the Year of the Snake

LAHAINA - Ring in Chinese New Year in Lahaina Town on Friday, Feb. 15. Festivities kick off with a martial arts demonstration on the Baldwin Home Museum lawn at the corner of Front and Dickenson streets at 5:30 p.m.

A traditional lion dance will follow, visiting Front Street merchants and ending with a firecracker display at the Wo Hing Museum, 858 Front St., at 9 p.m.

All are invited as LahainaTown Action Committee and Lahaina Restoration Foundation host a celebration of Chinese tradition and culture.

Dennis Ryan will discuss “Coins of the Qing (Manchu) Dynasty” on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Wo Hing Museum Cook House.

Festivities will include children's arts and crafts, Farmers' Market, Year of the Snake merchandise, delicacies from Fu Lin restaurant and a lion dance presented by Ben Seng Au's Shaolin Arts Society at the Wo Hing Museum.

At 6:30 p.m. in the Wo Hing Cook House, a special presentation will be given by Dennis Ryan, a retired school teacher and director of research for the Albany Legislature. Ryan will speak on "Coins of the Qing (Manchu) Dynasty," China's last reigning dynasty.

Ryan will present an authentic 49-inch jade ritual belt. This unique linked belt was carved from a single piece of jade. It is dated between 206 B.C. and 7 A.D. and was found in a burial plot of a Chinese noble said to be the son of an emperor.
