NAPILI - Maui Preparatory Academy and its Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Jonathan L. Silver, Ph.D., as the next head of school starting with the 2013-14 school year.

Silver will replace outgoing Head of School George Baker, who is retiring in May.

"We are very fortunate to have Dr. Jonathan Silver taking the helm here at Maui Prep as we emerge from the startup era to a growth and development phase. Dr. Silver's experience as both a teacher and a head of school who has realized excellent results at growing schools, as well as building academic programs, will serve our community well," said Dean Otto, president of the Board of Trustees.

Dr. Jonathan Silver will come back to visit the Maui Preparatory Academy campus in March to begin his acclimation. He will officially take the reigns as head of school on July 1, 2013.

Dr. Silver commented, "From my very first conversations with members of the search committee, and affirmed by my meetings with the Maui Prep board, administrative team, faculty, students and parents, I know that Maui Prep is a special community with extraordinary potential. I am truly excited by the opportunity to join the Maui Prep 'ohana and cannot wait to see and be a part of the next chapter of Maui Prep's growth and development."

Baker has been with Maui Prep since its doors first opened and oversaw a period of great growth during his eight-year tenure, including the additions of the high school, lower school and preschool.

Baker said he is looking forward to his retirement on Maui.

Silver has enjoyed a 25-year history in private and independent schools, including serving as head of school at The Village School (one of the fastest-growing private schools in Houston, Texas) and assistant head of school at The Emery/Weiner School in Houston.

Prior to working in administration, Silver was a history, economics and psychology teacher, as well as a tennis and baseball coach in Pennsylvania.

He was also the founding director of Pennsylvania Regional Art and Music Day Camp, which is dedicated to the fine and performing arts.

Dr. Silver received his Ph.D. in History & Policy with specialization in the Histories of Education, Childhood and Youth from Carnegie Mellon University (Pennsylvania).

He earned a Master's Degree in History & Policy, also from Carnegie Melon, and a Master's in Educational Thought & Policy from the University of Rochester in New York.

As head of school at Maui Prep, Silver will be responsible for the day-to-day educational, financial and operational leadership for the school. He will help to develop and oversee the implementation of short- and long-term strategic goals. Silver will report to the Board of Trustees.
