Banquet concludes exciting football season for the Lunas

LAHAINA - The Lahainaluna High School football program celebrated its championship season with the annual banquet held in the spacious, sparkling, new campus cafeteria on Saturday evening, Dec. 8.

The Luna varsity and junior varsity players, managers, coaches, trainers, school administrators and family were present to celebrate Maui Interscholastic League championships for both the varsity and JV teams, as well as the Lunas' stirring run to the Division II title game at Aloha Stadium during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

After dinner, the players were recognized and presented their letters and bars for multiple years with the team. Senior tri-captains John John Lacuesta, Mark Alamon and Tytus Lucas, along with classmates Asi Fatongia, Samiuela Filiai, Darren Recaido, Christian Cardenas Ayala, Reece Sinenci, Christian Portugal, Semisi Filikitonga, Kele Balagso, Lovai Hong and Joshua Coston, all received special recognition in completion of their final season with the Lahainaluna football program. Senior Team Managers Kaua Arcangel, Kekuu Haake and Tita Akina were also honored.

The coaches were also introduced; they include varsity co-head coaches Bobby Watson and Garret Tihada and assistants Mike Arakawa, Randy Arakawa, Kenui Watson, Dean Rickard, Kekoa Mowat, Sonnie Waiohu, Dal Magno and Joey Tihada; and JV head coach Aloha Kaniho with assistants Andy Claydon, Darren Kawahara, Chris Pinho and Nolle Smith.

The athletic trainers this year were Jon Conrad and Mikala Pinho.

The Arthur Osamu "Oscar" Chihara Memorial Football Scholarship awards were presented to Tytus Lucas and Samiuela Filiai.

The awards, given annually by the Harry W. Gorst Company and Jane and Mike Heagerty, are presented to the Luna senior players that most exemplify the passion and poise the late Oscar Chihara displayed on the football field.

Lucas and Filiai each received $1,000 cash scholarships, custom plaques from Maui Marking Device and unique lei courtesy of Sharon Nohara.
