Moniz to share Maui Christmas tales at Hawaiian Chamber meeting

By Staff | Dec 6, 2012

Wayne Moniz’ storytelling artistry won him the Honolulu Advertiser’s 2010 Readers’ Choice Award for “Under Maui Skies and Other Stories.”

WAIKAPU – Wayne Moniz, “Dean of Maui Playwrights” and winner of the coveted Cades literary award, will share vignettes of Christmas on Maui with island businesspeople at the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce Holiday Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Maui Tropical Plantation.

The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.

Moniz will also read excerpts from his latest book, “Beyond the Reef: Stories of Maui and the World,” from his 2010 triumph “Under Maui Skies and Other Stories” and appropriately from one of his 14 plays, “Hawaiian Kine Christmas Carol.”

His short stories, poetry and plays, rich in the cultural traditions of Maui Nei, connect today’s readers to many generations of Maui ancestors.

This holiday meeting is open to the public. Members are encouraged to invite friends to hear Moniz, celebrate Christmas and look forward to 2013.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for networking and cocktails, followed by a buffet dinner. Dinner is $20; parking is free.

Attendees are encouraged to donate staples and canned goods to the Maui Food Bank.

The Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber brings together Hawaiian cultural values and commerce. Membership is open to all who share and practice Hawaiian values and the group’s mission: “To promote and sustain our Hawaiian Culture, nurturing a strong community of Hawaiian Values and to enhance opportunities for success in business and education.”

Every month, members convene to hear community and state leaders report on important topics that affect business on Maui, and for “talk story” meetings where members may build relationships and share business strategies, regulatory information and Maui economic trends.
