Lawmakers to hold community meeting
LAHAINA - State Sen. Roz Baker and Rep. Angus McKelvey will hold a community meeting on
Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 at the West Maui Senior Center.
As part of its Centennial Celebration, Lahaina Jodo Mission proudly presents a special Buddhist liturgical chanting concert by Gochikai, the Five Wisdoms Group from Japan, followed by juzukuri, a practice of chanting Nembutsu while passing beads of a large rosary (juzu) around by the participants. Members of Gochikai have performed around the world, from cathedrals in Europe to the Hagia Irini in Turkey. Don’t miss this unique experience in the Lahaina Jodo Mission Temple on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The West Maui lawmakers will hear comments from the public on priorities for the upcoming legislative session.
Lahaina Girls Softball registration slated
LAHAINA - Lahaina Girls Softball registration for the upcoming season is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. for returnees, and Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for all new players at Lahaina Cannery Mall.
The league is open to girls 5-16 years of age.
Divisions are T-Ball, Coach Pitch, and Fast-Pitch.
New players must bring a copy of their birth certificate and health/emergency information.
Registration fees will be collected at time of registration. Fees are $100 per player for ages 10u, 12u, 14u and 16u ($95 for siblings), and $35 per player for ages 6u and 8u ($25 for siblings).
The player must be present, because photos will be taken at registration.

Support group for bereaved parents to hold event
WAILUKU - Heaven Sent, a support group for bereaved parents, will hold its 17th annual Memorial Tree Trimming in loving memory of infants, children, teenagers and adults on Sunday, Dec. 16.
The event will be held at Wailuku Union Church at 327 S. High St. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by the program at 2 p.m.
Bring an ornament to place on the tree in memory of your child. Parents are welcome to personalize it any way they wish. The group will have paper ornaments available for anyone unable to bring one. During the program, members will call the loved one's name. Family members and friends will be able to come up to put their ornament(s) on the special tree.

Pearl Harbor presentation set
MAALAEA - The Story of Hawaii Museum located in the Maalaea Harbor Shops will present a Hawaiian History Evening with Maui historian and author Deborah C. Pike on Friday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m.
She will speak about the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Live music and light refreshments are included. An admission donation of $10 for the evening is requested.

Church Ladies to hold bake sale
LAHAINA - Love Christmas goodies but too busy to make them?
Come to the Church Ladies' Bake Sale on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Lahaina United Methodist Church on the corner of Front and Baker streets.
They will set up tables from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - or as long as the goodies last - in front of the church.
Lots of parking, and plenty of candy, cookies, pies and more - all from scratch. Proceeds will benefit Lahaina United Methodist Church.
AARP Driver Safety Class slated
LAHAINA - An AARP Driver Safety Class will be held at the West Maui Senior Center on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This class is open to everyone but designed for drivers 50 years and older. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one's driving ability and how to compensate. The instructor is Kelly Stanley.
The $14 fee (cash or check) will be collected at the beginning of class. AARP members receive a $2 discount, so bring your card to class. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete this class.
