Spring registration for the UHMC Lahaina Education Center underway

By Staff | Nov 29, 2012

These Lahainaluna High School juniors and seniors are celebrating the successful completion of their first college course on preparing for the job market.

LAHAINA – The spring 2013 schedule of classes for the Lahaina Education Center has some new offerings.

For the first time, Math 100 (Survey of Mathematics) will be offered via HITS, the closed circuit television system. Students can view the course at the Lahaina facility Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m.

Harvey Reed’s Digital Photography course will be of interest to community “lifelong learners” and students looking for an interesting humanities class. Offered as a semester-long three-credit course, it will meet on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Class time will be divided between island-wide photography field trips and Photoshop-based digital lab work at the center. Designated as ART 107D, this class will introduce the fundamental, technical and aesthetic practices of digital photography. Students will learn camera operation, computer editing techniques, basic lighting concepts and composition.

This coming spring may be the last time the Oceanography 201 Lab is offered live in Lahaina. The OCN 201 lecture class must be taken concurrently or previously. The lab is a one-credit course.

Marti Wukelic, center coordinator and former hospitality industry human resources director, will teach Organizational Behavior (MGMT 122) as an online course to accommodate busy residents considering a career in management, as well as current supervisors.

Understanding human behavior within an organization will translate to any field of employment. Although this class is taught online, it will include videotaped lectures, the option of submitting assignments via video and more.

This is a three-credit class that is required for a Supervision Certificate of Achievement.

Resident tuition for UHMC Lahaina courses is $101 per credit plus $3 tech fee, so a full three-credit course will cost $303 plus $9 in tech fees.

The spring semester will begin on Monday, Jan. 7, and end on May 9.

In other exciting news for West Maui students, the Lahaina Education Center computer lab will be upgraded with new computers for the spring 2013 term.

West Maui residents may access the full Lahaina schedule online at www.maui.hawaii.edu/mcclahaina. To request one, call 662-3911.

Prospective students are also welcome to stop by the center at 60 Kenui St. by the Front Street Apartments.
