In what was billed as the Maui Interscholastic League game of the decade, the Lahainaluna High School football team lost its first game of the 2012 season on Saturday. The Baldwin Bears rallied to pull out a thrilling 20-17 overtime victory to spoil the Lunas’ Homecoming night led by Queen Leslie-Ann Mina and King Michael Naganuma. Before a packed War Memorial Stadium crowd of over 8,000 fans, most of them dressed in Lahainaluna red, the Bears scored the tying touchdown with two minutes left in regulation and then pushed across the winning score after the Lunas kicked a field goal to take a short-lived 17-14 lead. Lahainaluna and Baldwin thus tied for the overall MIL championship. The Lunas can clinch the MIL Division II title and a trip to the state playoffs with a victory over Maui High next week. WMTA to host 'Candidates Night'

LAHAINA - The West Maui Taxpayers Association's "Candidates' Night 2012" will be held at Lahaina Civic Center on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m.

The WMTA event is the only forum of its kind in West Maui.

The tradition for WMTA's Candidates' Night is to invite all candidates appearing on the West Maui ballot. Each candidate may give an introductory statement, followed by pre-selected questions in a debate format from the WMTA moderator.

If only one candidate in a race is present, or the office is not contested, the candidate will have an opportunity to provide a short statement about his or her mission and goals.

The forum is free and open to the public. Complementary food service starts at 5 p.m., with dinner provided by Arturo Ortiz and Dave Mello of Kaanapali Paradise Grill and Roundtable Pizza.

The event will be aired live on AKAKU: Maui Community Television and videotaped for re-broadcasting.
