Maui blood drives slated

LAHAINA – Summer means fun, and often a drop in blood donations. That’s because schools are out, families are on vacation and donors who regularly give throughout the year often take a break and wait until fall to start donating again.

But the need for blood doesn’t take a vacation. This month, the Blood Bank of Hawaii invites Maui residents to donate blood at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Kahului Stake, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20; 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21; and 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

A drive will also be held on Thursday, Aug. 23, at Lahaina Civic Center from 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

To make an appointment or get more information, visit “http://www.BBH.org”>www.BBH.org or call the Blood Bank of Hawaii toll-free at 1-800-372-9966.

The second annual Lanai Slack Key Guitar Festival will be held from Aug. 17-19. The alluring sounds of slack key guitar will sweep the island, from the beaches of Manele Bay to the upcountry of The Lodge at Koele. Throughout the three-day event, guests will be treated to free performances by Grammy Award and Na Hoku Hanohano winners, including John Keawe (above), Dennis Kamakahi, Brother Noland, Kawika Kahiapo, Ernest Puaa, Kevin Brown, Benny Uyetake, Ekolu Kalama and hula with Hope Keawe. World champion stand up paddler Ekolu Kalama from Molokai will also teach a SUP workshop at Manele Bay Saturday morning. Visit www.lanaiukulelefestival.com for event details.

“A Reflection of Kalaupapa: Past, Present and Future” will be on display in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Schaefer International Gallery from Aug. 19 to Sept. 30. Photographer Wayne Levin’s eloquent portraits of Kalaupapa residents and their families surge through this poignant exhibit, organized by Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa. Supplemented by archival documents and interviews, Levin’s photographs — Mariano Rea’s beach house at Kalaupapa taken in 1986 is pictured — reflect the past and present of Kalaupapa, telling the complete story of this remote northern peninsula on the island of Molokai. On Aug. 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the McCoy Studio Theater, “Remembering Kalaupapa,” a panel discussion sharing connections to Kalaupapa with Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa leaders, family descendants and journalist Val Monson, is slated. And on Monday, Aug. 20, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the gallery, Levin will lead an exhibit walkthrough and lecture. Call 243-4288 or visit www.MauiArts.org for information.

The brew pub is located in the Kahana Gateway Shopping Center.
