Reminders for parents from Lahaina Intermediate School

By Staff | Jul 12, 2012

LAHAINA – Aloha, Parents! Although we are still on summer break, I feel that I need to communicate with you all to give you a “heads up” on this coming school year’s Wednesday schedule.

Last year, Lahaina Intermediate School submitted a request for a SCC Waiver to the state to allow our students to be dismissed from school at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesdays instead of at 1:15 p.m. We received informal notification that our request was approved the day before school was out for the summer.

The reason for the early release time is to enable our staff to meet during a common planning time. Up to last school year, our teachers were unable to have sufficient dialogue and planning time among teams and departments regarding student assessment data. We were unable to plan/coordinate instructional lessons to ensure that all reading and math benchmarks were being taught through interdisciplinary units across all content areas. With the early Wednesday dismissal, we will have the time to move forward. Please note: the total instructional minutes is in excess of 25 minutes per week, per the current teacher contract.

Lunch will be served prior to the dismissal of all students at 11:45 a.m.

Bus pickup will take place immediately at 11:45 a.m., with the exception of students who live in the outlying areas of Olowalu and Honokohau Valley. These busses will pick up LIS students shortly before or after 1:15 p.m., since all elementary, intermediate and high school students in the complex ride the same bus. Until the buses arrive at LIS, students will be supervised in the cafe dining room by our staff of paraprofessionals.

Students may receive assistance with their homework during this time. There will not be any formal student activities planned during this time. School rules will continue to be enforced for health and safety reasons.

If you plan to pickup your child after school on Wednesdays, please go directly to the cafe. You do not need to report to the office.

Students who pick up their younger siblings from Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary School (PNES) may walk home and return to pick up their siblings at 1:15 p.m., or they must remain in the cafe dining room until 1:15 p.m.

No LIS student will be allowed to enter the PNES campus until 1:15 p.m. It is essential that parents understand our expectations and support us by speaking with your children to follow directions. We do not wish to disrupt instructional time at the elementary school. Please plan accordingly with your family.

After school tutoring for reading and writing will continue to take place on Wednesdays. The time for tutoring will be moved up to noon to 1:30 p.m.

Date reminders: S.U.R.F. payments through mail began July 5 (letters went home with students on May 24); S.U.R.F. pickup and payments will be held at the School Office through July 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; S.U.R.F. payments after school starts may be submitted at the office from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Mass S.U.R.F. in the Cafe will be held Wednesday, July 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Sixth Grade Parent Orientation will be held in the Cafe on Wednesday, July 25, from 6 to 7 p.m.

If you have any questions, please call us at 662-3965. Enjoy the rest of your summer break. IMUA!
