Food product contest slated at Maui County Ag Festival

WAIKAPU - Maui Food Product to Market Contest organizers are looking for a new, locally made food product that utilizes the most amount of locally grown products, such as Grown on Maui fruits and vegetables.

Submissions must have commercial viability, because the Maui Food Technology Center (MFTC) will help that local entrepreneur take the product from idea to the store shelf.

Four to six servings of the product must be delivered between 9 and 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, at the Grand Taste Education tent at the Maui County Ag Festival at Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu.

The entry must include a list of all ingredients in the recipe, specifying the local ingredients, and a short story about the product.

The winner will receive assistance from MFTC consultants to complete the project.

The prize for second place is two hours of free consultation with a food scientist and two free nutritional labels ($300 value), and for third, one hour of free consultation with a food scientist and one free nutritional label ($150 value).

MFTC was formed as a nonprofit to offer food science services to local food product entrepreneurs.

MFTC's goal is to assist the growth of value-added food products through Hawaii's food industry, connecting students, food producers and farmers through the practice of food science.

The center will help local chefs and entrepreneurs desiring to develop and market their own products.

MFTC offers a wide range of services to residents, students and entrepreneurs from the target communities, including, but not limited to, the following:

1) Scientific measurements of food quality: Chemical, microbial, physical sensory evaluation.

2) Product and process development, including sourcing for ingredients, equipment, supplies and co-packers.

3) Food labeling: Nutrition Facts Panel, Ingredient Statement and Allergen Declaration.
