Try Pineapple Grill’s unforgettable breakfasts

KAPALUA - GOOD MORNING, MAUI! Time to break the fast, and there is no better restaurant to breakfast-in-style than the Pineapple Grill in Kapalua! Oh yes, one can order ordinary bacon and eggs in most restaurants, but given the choice, why not order from a delightful, exotic menu?

Executive Chef Ryan Luckey has created a menu that is unsurpassed, with impressive choices not found on other menus. And the location is a postcard setting overlooking the 18th hole of The Bay Course's emerald green golf course.

In Chef Luckey's absence, Sous Chef William Laborte guided us through the intriguing menu. A local boy, Chef Laborte - or "Honey Boy," as his grandmother called him - started his culinary career in the early 1970s.

"When I graduated from high school in 1972, there were only three jobs available for a young man," he laughed, "work in the cane fields, the pineapple fields or work in a restaurant."

Fortunately for us, he chose the restaurant field. He worked at the Maui Surf Hotel (before it became The Westin), Kapalua Bay Hotel and many other restaurants before settling into the Pineapple Grill.

"We use all local Maui products," said Chef Laborte. "We support the local farmers, Surfing Goat Dairy, Maui Cattle Company and many others."

Chef Ryan offers four Breakfast Benedicts: the traditional Eggs Benedict, the Veggie Benedict, Pork Patty Benedict and the incredible Crabby Cakes Benedict that we devoured with lump crab and Opal-Basil Hollandaise. And what is Opal-Basil, you might ask? It is a darker, lighter basil than ordinary, and the combination is outstanding.

In Chef Ryan's Hash Selections, one can order the Kalua Pork and Cabbage, the Kalbi Short Rib and Maui Onions, or the flavorful Bikini Blonde Braised Corned Beef - we were served the Kalbi Short Rib and the Bikini Blonde Braised Corned Beef selections with two fresh farm eggs crowning the top. Oh, such selections!

Vegetarians will delight in the hearty Surfing Goat Dairy Veggie with local farms' zucchini, eggplant, spinach, tomato, Kula corn, fresh herbs and Surfing Goat Cheese - a vegetarian winner! Home-fried potatoes, fresh fruit cup, home-style biscuits and Pineapple Grill's Pineapple, Strawberry and Guava Jam accompany this dish.

A visitor from the South, along with Mauians, would really enjoy the "G-Man's" Biscuits and Sausage Gravy, Maui-style! OH MY!! Beautifully presented, it's two open-faced biscuits smothered with Jalapeno-Portuguese Sausage Gravy with a Cilantro-Green Onion Garnish. Just try to find that one on other Maui menus!

And then visit south of the border for Huevos Rancheros "En Fuego" with crispy corn tortillas, chorizo, Spanish rice, black beans, two free-range Kapalua Organic Eggs, fresh salsa, melted cheese, sour cream and cilantro - OLAY! Beautifully presented and absolutely, if I may use the word, SCRUMPTIOUS!

Oh, Pineapple Grill knows how to present unforgettable breakfasts. As I mentioned before, why settle for bacon and eggs when one can partake of such luxurious cuisine?

Executive Chef Luckey also offers all-time Hawaiian breakfast favorites such as a hearty Loco Moco with an eight-ounce Maui Cattle Company Burger, a Paniolo Breakfast with Portuguese Sausage, and of course, crisp-hot buttery waffles and French Toast. A Fresh Fruit Cup of strawberries, pineapple, papaya and grapes accompanies most selections.

The Breakfast Menu is offered from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily.

In December, Pineapple Grill is offering the Kama'aina Breakfast Drawing. With every breakfast entree ordered, one can enter to win 12 breakfasts for two in 2012. That is one breakfast for two each month next year.

How to enter? Dine between 8 and 11 a.m. seven days a week. One ballot is provided for every breakfast entree ordered. A Hawaii driver's license is requested. Enter as many times as you like!

For reservations, call (808) 669-9600. Pineapple Grill is located at 200 Kapalua Bay Drive in Kapalua Resort.

Pau for now
