LAHAINA – In mid-November, Maui Crane Services lifted the “Lahaina” and “Launiupoko” locomotives off truck beds and onto tracks that were laid in the interpretive area of the Pioneer Mill Company Smokestack.

In a little under three hours, using two cranes, Maui Crane Services put the locomotives safely on the tracks.

Iolani Kaniho, operations manager for the Sugar Cane Train, and his lead mechanic, Stan Sosna, donated their expertise to the project and assisted with the placement of the trains.

Previously, Kaniho helped Lahaina Restoration Foundation staffers Terry Morgan and Jesse Neizman lay the track for the locomotives, which was donated by the Sugar Cane Train.

The project will include a roof structure over the trains to protect them from the sun, moving the fence mauka and replanting sugar cane, and installing interpretive plaques to tell the history of the plantation trains.

The Pioneer Mill Company Smokestack restoration, engraved brick walkway, interpretive area and new locomotive display is a project of Lahaina Restoration Foundation.
