Court ruling clears way for Halloween in Lahaina

By Staff | Oct 28, 2011

WAILUKU – Second Circuit Court Judge Rhonda Loo today dissolved a temporary restraining order that sought to block Halloween events planned by LahainaTown Action Committee and the county Office of Economic Development on Front Street Monday.

The lawsuit was filed Friday by the Hawaiian group Na Makua O’Maui and Kula resident Richard Dancil.

Their attorney, Keoni Agard, said, “We got an adverse decision here. The TRO was dissolved today by court action.

“We are going to have to go back and discuss options – take a look at a possible appeal in the future… But the October 31st event will go forward.”

Mayor Alan Arakawa commented, “We are pleased with the court’s decision to allow the county to have a safe Halloween in Lahaina.

“In years past when we did not close down Front Street, it made the event hazardous, with people overflowing off the sidewalk and onto the street and walking alongside traffic,” he continued.

“We would like to thank all of the businesses and community members who worked with us to make this a safe and fun, family-friendly event for everyone. Please join us in having a Happy Halloween.”
