The state Department of Transportation recently conducted maintenance work at the Ukumehame Silt Basin built in the early 1970s. The work was needed to rebuild berms and restore capacity. According to Charlene Shibuya of DOT, Honoapiilani Highway “frequently floods during the rainy season due to the reduced capacity of the basin, and the basin inlet was no longer effectively channeling the water into the basin.” With soil available from the Lahaina Bypass project under way in Lahaina, “the state felt that this was an opportunity to use (Goodfellow Bros. Inc.) to ‘beef’ up the basin in preparation for the upcoming rainy season,” she noted in an e-mail. The state used as many trucks as possible to expedite the work and limit impacts on traffic, she added. Photo by Craig Nalette.
