WAILUKU — Auditions are slated for the 2011-12 season of the Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (MYPO), which welcomes students from all schools and home school families.

Instruments include strings (violin, viola, cello, bass), woodwinds (flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet), brasses (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba) and percussion (timpani, drums, drum set, mallets).

Auditions for the Philharmonic Orchestra will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, for the woodwind, brass and percussion, and for the strings on Aug. 27, in the Baldwin High School Band Room.

Auditions for the Sinfonietta will be held in the band room on Sept. 3 during the regular rehearsal time from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Audition registration forms and audition times and music for specific instruments are listed on the orchestra website at www.mauiyouthphilharmonic.org. Rehearsal schedules, fees, performance information and membership requirements are also available on the website.

Tuition for the Philharmonic Orchestra and Sinfonietta for the 2011-12 season is $310, consisting of a required $150 deposit plus monthly fees of $20 payable September 2011 through April 2012. Both orchestras will be conducted by Lance Jo.

“MYPO provides musical development opportunities for student musicians,” said Jo. “Students should have positive attitudes, a willingness to learn, a strong commitment to themselves as well as to the orchestra and its members, and the self-discipline necessary to work hard at learning the music up to a performance level. Making music with fellow musicians is an enjoyable experience that can have lifelong benefits for students.”

Rehearsals for all orchestra programs begin Saturday, Sept. 3.

MYPO also offers beginning and advanced music theory classes, and a beginning strings program that does not require auditions. For more information, visit www.mauiyouthphilharmonic.org or e-mail mypomaui@gmail.com.
