The public is invited to enjoy performances by some of Maui’s best classical musicians, as well as several youngsters performing for the first time.
The Maui Cello Quartet, harpist Tatyana Shapiro-Leiste, Maui Brass Ensemble and the Suzuki-Maui Talent Education and Ability Development group will be featured.
The program begins at 3:30 p.m. with the Maui Cello Quartet. The group’s selections cover a broad spectrum of classical music from Baroque to modern day compositions. Their unique blend of sounds were a highlight at last year’s festival.
A performance by the young students of Suzuki-Maui Talent Education and Ability Development follows at 4:15 p.m.
Classical harpist Shapiro-Leiste will play pieces by Handel, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Donizetti, Gliere and others beginning at 4:50 p.m.
And the Maui Brass Ensemble will finish the program from 5:30 to 6 p.m. with music by Pezel, Bach and Handel; a Scott Joplin rag; and two Japanese folk songs, “Sakura” and “Kimigayo.”
The Maui Cello Quartet is a collaboration of cellists of the Maui Pops Orchestra: Silvina Samuel, Cheryl Lindley, Ron Schecter and Michelle Ancheta.
For more than 20 years, the Maui Brass Ensemble has performed on Maui, specializing in classical music and popular holiday concerts. Members are topnotch musicians and regular performers with Maui Pops and the Maui Community Band: Lisa Owen (tuba), Lance Jo (trumpet), Stephen Rodrigues (trombone), Sue Nakama (French horn) and new trumpet player Julius Galanto.
Suzuki-Maui Talent Education and Development was founded by Teresa Skinner, who is also the group’s director. Her Suzuki pupils usually range in age from five to 15 and learn to play their stringed instruments by ear.
The annual Maui Invitational Music Festival is presented by Arts Education for Children Group (AECG).
