Two easy ways to support Women Helping Women

March 3, 2011
Lahaina News
Women Helping Women (WHW) is an important Maui charity that provides emergency shelter services and programs for victims of domestic violence.

Its mission is to end domestic violence through advocacy, education and prevention while offering safety, support and empowerment.

Women and children on Maui turn to this nonprofit for vital crisis intervention and support services.

Like Many Maui charities, WHW faces limited funding and growing needs. Here are two easy ways you can help them.

The West Side community will host an “Everything Must Go, Sale of the Century” on Saturday, March 5, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Aloha Self Storage at 23 Ulupono St. in Lahaina.

Buy gently used clothing for men, women, children and infants; small household items; keiki books and toys; infant strollers; and portable cribs, with proceeds supporting WHW.

And Women Helping Women will hold its third annual “Run Because You Want To, Not Because You Have To: 5 and 10K Fun Run for Domestic Violence” in Paia Town on Saturday, March 12, starting at 8 a.m.

Runners and joggers of all ages and abilities are invited to take part in the early morning event that will feature music, refreshments, prize drawings and — most importantly — the opportunity to support a good cause.

Beginning promptly at 8 a.m., this year’s fun run will start and end at Green Banana Cafe, with a scenic course that stretches from the heart of Paia to Kanaha Beach Park in Kahului.

At the finish line, awards will be given to the top finishers, and all participants who finish the race will be rewarded with a refreshing shave ice from Green Banana Café’s Yogurt Bar and be eligible for several prize drawings.

Registration fees, in addition to pledges raised by fleet-footed fun run participants, will benefit Women Helping Women’s emergency shelter services and programs.

Registration fees for this year’s event are $35 (10K) and $25 (5K) for adults; $30 (10K) and $20 (5K) for participants under 18 years of age; or free with a minimum of $25 in outside pledges. All participants must register on or before Thursday, March 10, and race packets will be distributed beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the event at Green Banana Cafe at 137 Hana Highway in Paia.

For more information, or to download a registration form, visit the Women Helping Women website at www.whwmaui.net or call Green Banana Café at 579-9130.
