McLeod to serve as energy commissioner

By Staff | Jan 6, 2011

WAILUKU — Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa last week announced his appointment of Douglas P. McLeod as the county’s energy commissioner.

McLeod is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University and formerly practiced as an environmental lawyer.

As an attorney, McLeod worked on energy generation, transmission and storage issues in at least ten different states.

He also has experience developing renewable energy projects in Hawaii and on the Mainland, including both net-metered solar photovoltaic (PV) projects and the new Feed In Tariff solar PV systems.

On Maui, McLeod built two commercial buildings using “green” principles, and his Two Daughters Building in Kihei is a leading example of energy-efficient building practices.

“I am pleased that Doug will be joining our team to help meet the aggressive renewable energy goals of my administration and to help create jobs while maximizing the millions of dollars in federal treasury grant funds for renewable energy projects,” said Arakawa. “Doug has the necessary experience and know-how to push our energy policies forward and to make things actually happen.”

“Maui County is on the leading edge of renewable energy development, and I hope to help… Arakawa find ways for these projects to benefit the people of Maui, Molokai and Lanai in terms of economic development and jobs. We will also work to identify county-owned facilities that are good candidates for renewable energy systems, so that the cost of operating government buildings will be as low as possible,” said McLeod.
