Mayor Charmaine Tavares last week announced that 60 seats are opening on a wide range of county panels, including the Board of Ethics, Board of Variances and Appeals, Commission on Culture and the Arts, Committee on the Status of Women, Cost of Government Commission, Cultural Resources Commission, Liquor Control Commission, Maui Planning Commission, Police Commission, Real Property Tax Review Board and Traffic Safety Council.
Volunteers that serve on county boards hear public testimony, review policies and standards and make recommendations.
Tavares said these citizens are important partners in county government.
“Each one of our boards, committees and commissions demonstrate how government and citizens work together to the benefit of our community,” said Tavares.
“Every year, more than 250 citizens participate, each bringing their unique perspective, talents and life experiences. Their efforts and commitment to serving our community in this way are commendable and appreciated.”
The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Dec. 15. The two- to five-year positions are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the County Council.
Applications are available online at www.mauicounty.gov (click on the Boards and Commissions box on the lower right), the Information Booth in the lobby at the Kalana O Maui Building, Lahaina Public Library and Parks and Recreation Permit Office at Lahaina Civic Center. Many who serve on the County Council began by volunteering on a county panel. What skills or insight can you contribute?
