Lahaina Intermediate School students to get inside look at hotel industry

September 3, 2009
BY MARSHA NAKAMURA, Principal, Lahaina Intermediate School
LAHAINA — September is here. Sept. 10 is the eighth grade field trip, “OPPORTUNITY ROCKS.” You may have already read about this in the Lahaina News.

We are very fortunate to have such a high-energy Community member of our School Community Council (SCC), Diane Pure. Being on the council, Diane realized how little our students are exposed to the “real world” of career opportunities and pursued an idea by sharing it with the hotels in West Maui. She was able to get five major hotels on board to offer a tour of their departments with our eighth-graders, so they are able to learn how to prepare themselves for the future.

Many of you work for the hotels, yet your children may not have a clear picture of exactly what your jobs entail and what skills are required. As the students tour “behind the scenes,” they will be able to connect the skills they are currently learning at school to the skills the hotel employees use to be successful in their jobs. We are looking for adult volunteers to be chaperones along with our teachers when the students form smaller groups for the tours. If you are able to be a chaperone, please call the school at 662-3965.

LIS extends our mahalo and appreciation to the hosts: Kaanapali Beach Hotel, Royal Lahaina Resort, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas, and the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. Mahalo to Diane Pure for coordinating this project with Jeremy Seamster, Lori Koyama, Becky Altier and Jay Petrakis.

Parents, thank you for attending LIS’ annual Open House and PTSA General Meeting last Wednesday, Aug. 19. During the homeroom period, teachers distributed new user names and user passwords for our new communication tool, EdLine.com. Last year, we used Classroll.com. We found that EdLine.com was more user-friendly and provided more options for LIS.

We are able to include announcements on the website, so you are aware when important documents are sent home with your child. Missing assignments and current grades will continue to be accessed by course and teacher. EdLine.com will continue to offer student information at your fingertips. Please do not hesitate to contact the school at 662-3965 should you need additional support accessing this system. IMUA!
