Smash 'n grab: Big looting during Kenya mall siege

September 30, 2013
Associated Press

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Jewelry cases smashed. Mobile phones ripped from displays. Cash registers emptied. Laptops gone.

Shop owners at Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, are returning to their stores following a devastating terrorist attack to find much of their valuables ransacked. One witness told The Associated Press that he even saw a soldier take cigarettes out of a dead man's pocket.

Shop owners and managers spent Monday carting merchandise and other valuables out of their shops and restaurants. No one knows when the mall will open again. Second, valuables are being removed so nothing more is stolen.

Employees of a book shop returned to find cash registers open and the cash gone. The store's laptops were also stolen. Shop owner Paku Tsavani, though, said all the shop's books remained in place.
